Ivorian striker Didier Drogba has signed a deal that will see him representing Montreal Impact in Major League Soccer (MLS) action.

The striker will be a designated player at the Canadian club, meaning that his wages will not be restricted by the general MLS salary cap which is in place.

Drogba left English Premier League side Chelsea at the end of last season, ending his second stint at the London club with total figures of 164 goals in 381 appearances. He also represented Galatasaray of Turkey, but the Blues have been his major employers in Europe over the last decade.

Drogba ended his final encounter against Sunderland with Chelsea following an injury, but in the ultimate tribute and show of respect for the former Cote D’Ivoire skipper, a selection of his team-mates picked him up and carried him off the field, as he exited the EPL pitch for the very last time.

Following that touching moment, Drogba revealed that he would be leaving the club, and that an MLS move seemed likely.

He has now made good on that declaration, signing with the Montreal Impact, which ended the previous season at the bottom of the table.

Speaking to his club’s official website, Montreal president Joey Saputo said that Drogba joining the club was “one of the biggest days in club history.”

Saputo added, “It’s an honour to welcome Didier Drogba to the Impact. From the first conversation I had with him, I felt that he really wanted to play in Montreal. His arrival will be beneficial in every aspect.”
