Africa’s biggest mobile telecoms firm, MTN Group, is making plans to launch a mobile service in Namibia at the end of August. State-owned operator, MTC, currently dominates Namibia, a country of over two-million people.

MTN has operated in Namibia for over 20 years but has mainly provided Internet services to logistics institutions, financial institutions and wholesale customers. They offer mobile network services to other African countries including South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and Iran.

“We are working towards end of August,” Hester Marais, an executive at MTN Namibia, said.

MTN plans to use state-owned Telecom Namibia’s network infrastructure for its mobile service and also plans to enter the local mobile money market.
