Zambia: Operations Halted at Nchanga Underground Mine

Zambia’s Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has declared that operations on Nchanga underground mine (NUG) will be put on hold following the recent theft of high voltage cables within the mining jurisdiction.

The incident which happened after midnight Tuesday has led to the evacuation of 991 workers in the konkola minning industry.

According to a reporter, there was an unexpected sudden power outage at the ventilation shaft, while the night shift workers were on duty, later they discovered that more than nine high-voltage copper cables at the 11 kilovolt substation had been removed and taken away.

Also, Konkola has reported that a similar incident had happened before where 200 metres of high-voltage cabling was stolen.

The mining industry is on a stand still at the moment as precautions are been put in place to safeguard the site from theft.
